We had the absolute pleasure of having a visit from Tui Wordley and his 3 sons in the New Year. Brent, Scottie and Aaron, who accompanied their dad to Northland, Whangarei, to see where he grew up and his favorite surf spots. We had a great get together at the R.S.A. with over 23 turned up at short notice, to have a catch up, and meet our surfing hero. We were mostly 10-15 years younger than Tui, and all aspired to surf as well as him back in the day. Amazing difference to nowadays, there are lots of older guys out surfing now. In the early 60's there were none. I know the boys enjoyed their trip over, and are keen to get back one day, and will have lot's of contacts and places to stay. Amazing to find out that Tui still had a pair of shorts that Anne Edge had made him, and a lot of the other surfers back in the day. Tui has had them dipped in fibreglass and hanging on the wall.Anne was amazed to hear this, (she was/is a seamstress, and still sewing today.) You couldn't buy surfy shorts in the shops back in those days. Cheers, Lozza
Hey Mike loved looking through the photos of the reunion and past shots of days gone by. Dave Boyd put me onto them. Cheers Mate, might catch up in Sydney
Great idea, Mike, Sue, Brian who ever mentioned Cotton Tree and June 2016 sounds pretty good to me. I mentioned to Mike as a joke really about a cruise on Voyager of the Seas with the wave pool for the guy's surfing Comp. 7 nights around the Islands start at Approx $850 inside cabin to $1,400 for a Balcony, could be a lot of fun but probably not everyone's cup of tea. Happy Easter everyone. Pauline
Sorry to sound too enthusiastic Sue butive never been to Cotton Tree so am relying on your comments. Mike your date proposals are great we (Trish & I ) can work with that. Can someone else come forward with comments of support or provide alternative ideas
I am thinking that is good thinking Mike! Lets hope others are thinking that too. S
I'me thinking...June 2016 for Cotton Tree, and April 2017 for Waipu cove...not everyone needs to go to both...what do you think?
Can't take all the credit Mark, Brian's initial suggestion, can't steal his thunder ! LOL Be great spot though. Wherever it is, we can have lots of enjoyment. S
Definitely in favour of a Cotton tree get-together...would be great....Also just had a party where i am living in Manly with everyone singing and dancing to some of those old 60s music....was awesome...Mark was right...we need to 'Boogy down' and maybe Waipu Cove would be good for that. If we hired out the whole Waipu Cove Motel we could Boogie on to the early hours and not disturb anyone...have a 60s party would be fantastic , then hit the waves together the next day
Funny Sue mentioned Cotton Tree thats where Drew Campi suggested and handy to Maloolabars retail therapy for the Ladies and the Fabulous Maloolabar Fish Market yummy!! - and of course great surf at the main beach. In hindsite we could regroup as the 'Originals' (better than 'Golden Oldies') I'm also in favour of a Waipu Cove reunion maybe after the Qld tour as a lot of us started our surfing there - also handy to Mangawhai Heads. Anyway we need some feed back first on both ideas as to preference.
I was going to suggest Cotton Tree, it has the rivermouth for those of us that don't surf, we can standup paddle board or canoe, and it has the great surf beaches, Maroochydore, Alexandra Headlands, Mooloolaba and Mudjimba and all the beaches up to Noosa, we go there every Christmas for 3 weeks, it is a great spot, also the weather here is much better!! Especially if planned for April/May/June best of SEQld weather then. Also agree with Mark, have to have an evening of dancing and fun, while we all still can dance !!! Cheers Susan
another idea. With the great response to the recent reunion I wonder if we consider reforming the club of original members into 'Golden Oldies' version of Tatahi B/Riders and pay an annual sub to rejoin the club. Looking around the attendies this month every one looked 'party fit' ie: living life to the fullest, further more our people (ex Members of the 60's Club) are a little bit unique. Annual subs would bring us together again and contibute to the website expenses - I have no idea how you guys fund things at the moment but what you do benefits all of us. Two things, in hindsite, were missing from this months reunion - a bloody good 'boogi down' to the 60's music and remembering ex members who have passed on - that is a good reason to catch up bi - annually before we are all gone. Does that mean we have to form a Committee?- maybe but I'll gladly put my hand up to help out in an inaugaral group. Have a rest for a couple of months then maybe we can reconsider the reuniting ideas above if enough people agree!!
Lend me your ears - the thrill of the few days enjoyed the other weekend lingers strong and it will be a hard act to follow, however: Tatahi Board Riders Oz Tour Sunshine Coast Malloolabar-Noosa Qld 2017(say) We have a few ex members in Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast (more in latter) who maybe could host club members guiding them to their favourite and well known surf beaches. We are not all wealthy but with a 2 or 3 year gap one could plan and save for the tour - hell i'd even get myself fit for Boogy Boarding! You have email contact so if a few key people like the proposal the next step would be to call for expressions of interest from attendies at last weekends festivities. I'm also talking Block Bookings Air NZ , Motels and share van transport hire and gas costs over a week minimum to 10 days say with half the trip to do what you like tourist wise - visit friends/family etc. Mark Tate (T8E) PS:Obviously Trish and I'd be on steering committee
I agree with Susan, but prefer the Sunshine Coast (cotton tree) as that was the Hang- out place for many of us back in those days. Also a good excuse to exit good old NZ for a few days. let's do it!
I was thinking perhaps a reunion at either Sunshine Coast or Gold Coast, firstly was for a girls reunion, but no fun without the boys! However, good idea to perhaps have it at Waipu Cove, that's where we all have lots of memories. Happy to go along with everyone else though. If the majority are already in NZ may be less expensive for everyone. If you want me to check out accommodation/ day trips costs etc. on Sunshine and Gold I am happy to. Airports in both areas. I am all for an earlier reunion, be good to see each other whilst we are still all reasonably fit. Be good, look forward to. Susan
